Travellers crossing into Bulgaria from the small checkpoint at Bregovo, located in the northwest on the border with Serbia, can hardly avoid feeling that they have entered a haunted land. The three-hour-drive south to Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, involves passing through many ghost villages whose empty houses, once full of life, now fall apart against the beautiful mountainous background. The effects of depopulation are especially striking in northwest Bulgaria, the EU’s poorest region, but the same process is visible all around the country. – See more at:
